First Morning Prayer Services Start in January

For some months now, a volunteer team has been working to refurbish our third-floor staff lunchroom into a small chapel to be used for spiritual classes and worship. Murals, painted by Ed Higgins, grace the walls, a small fountain burbles, and the space offers a quiet private spot to pray or meditate.

On Sunday, November 27, Pastor Candace consecrated the chapel and a naming contest was held. We are pleased to announce that the name "Serenity Chapel" has been chosen from entries by KOPers Johanna Clocker and Ed Higgins.

Beginning Sunday, January 8, Rev. John Ransom, our volunteer Assistant Pastor for Spiritual Life, will offer "First Morning Prayer" services at 9:00 am in the Serenity Chapel. Designed to last approximately 20 minutes, these services will focus on psalm readings. All are welcome to attend.

January Spiritual and Personal Enrichment Classes

This monthly series, now in its third year, includes workshops, seminars, book discussions, and special events. It is designed to focus on spiritual development and growth--to educate and edify--as well as offering opportunities for learning new skills and socializing.

Most classes and events are free; all require advance registration. You may sign-up in the church social hall to register or call the church office (727-323-5857) during regular office hours--Monday-Thursday, 9:15 am-5:00 pm--and we will do it for you.

All classes begin at 6:30 pm and are held at King of Peace MCC, (3150 Fifth Avenue North, St. Petersburg, FL) unless otherwise noted.

January Monday and Wednesday night classes/events have been scheduled as follows:

January 4, 11, 18 and 25

Making Sense of God’s Will--This class, led by Pastor Candace R. Shultis, is based on Adam Hamilton’s book “Why?” The topics will be: Why do the innocent suffer?; Why do my prayers go unanswered?; Why can’t I see God’s will for my life?, and Why God’s love prevails. Come along and share your fears and faith.

January 9, 16, 23, and 30

The Basics of Islam--This is a continuation of the August series about Islam and features Georgetown and Temple University professor, John L. Esposito, whose DVD lectures will give you a better understanding of Islam’s role in contemporary society. A Q&A, led by Rev. Jake Kopmeier, follows each class. This class continues on February 6, 13, and 20.

January 9 and 23

Prayer and Reflection—Join Associate Pastor Lorraine Brock for this class that will follow Lectio Divina (Latin for divine reading), a Christian practice of
scriptural reading, meditation, and prayer intended to promote communion with God.

Church Lady Bingo Continues in January

Saturday, January 28, 7:00 pm

Every fourth Saturday night is the time when our very own Church Lady, Savannah Starr, and her team of zany volunteers will creating some madcap antics for our monthly Church Lady Bingo.

Admission is $20 (cash only, please). That buys you cards for eight games and a chance to win cash prizes, the 50/50 raffle, some free stuff, while sharing the fun and fellowship for a good cause.

Doors open at 6:30 pm for a 7:00 pm start. Don't forget to come hungry because the Kitchen Ladies and Gents will be cooking up hot dogs and nachos to titillate your taste buds and there'll be candy bars, chips, and sodas, too, at fabulously cheap and cheerful prices.

All proceeds from our monthly Church Lady Bingos benefit a local AIDS charity as well as King of Peace MCC. January's recipient is the AIDS Service Association of Pinellas (ASAP).

Quotable

"Old friends pass away, new friends appear. It is just like the days. An old day passes, a new day arrives. The important thing is to make it meaningful: a meaningful friend or a meaningful day."
