About
the Team
The Human Outreach Team (HOT) provides an opportunity for KOP MCC members and friends to look beyond the church confines and meet the special needs of people in our community and around the world.
Here’s a few of the ways HOT helps make a difference:
1. Feeding the homeless - every 4th Sunday at St. Vincent DePaul from 4:30pm-7pm. Also involves shopping for food and planning meals.
2. Holiday meals for the Wellness and Recovery Center run by the Suncoast Center (day facility for the mentally challenged) We come help the clients and staff celebrate the major holidays with food and fun. Always a lunch time event. These folks are way under-served and are ecstatic to see us coming in.
3. Collect funds to surgically correct cleft palates for children through the Smile Train Program.
4. Support St. Pete Free Clinic:
• Collect personal care items for their clients - Deodorant, toothpaste etc. (see the monthly suggested items below)
• Provide Christmas gifts for their Women's transition house
• Christmas Gift Tree program for children of families who are clients of the St. Pete Free Clinic
5. Support for "A Turning Point" which is a homeless inebriate take-in facility. We do several things for them:
• Provide food when we can after covering St. Vincent's 4th Sunday
• Collect personal care items - deodorant, toothpaste, etc. (see the monthly suggested items below)
• Provide gently used clothing
• Provide Laundry detergents
• Hairstyling through local stylists
6. Heiffer Project - we raise funds to provide farm animals and training to mostly 3rd world countries so they can become self-sufficient and teach others how to do the same. see: http://www.heifer.org (this is on hold for this year only).
7. Family Promise. a program due to start in September 2010. This is an interfaith network of all denominations that come together to provide shelter for families with children who find themselves homeless. KOP board has approved this and we will commit to housing for 4 weeks out of the year. see: www.familypromisepinellas.org for more info.
8. Another emerging ministry is "A Day of Beauty" - We are developing a once a month hair styling for the homeless and nearly homeless looking to be employed.(on a Sunday for 2-3 hours) This involves volunteer stylists and volunteers to support them (shampooing, clean-up between clients) check the HOT Calendar to the right for the latest info.
The best part about the Human Outreach Team is our number one priority --- Ourselves. We agree that to serve our community, we need to take care of ourselves first. There are some very strong relationships that naturally develop in this ministry because of that philosophy. There's a lot of restaurants around town that love us because we wind up sharing a lot of meals together.
